Our Wines

To Make Good Wine One Needs Fine Grapes

Our vineyards are planted on two different terroirs, which enable us to grow good grapes on rich, suitable soils to obtain varied, subtle aromas and flavors. The soil on the plateau is composed of silt, sand and red clay, ideal for white wines such as Chenin, Chardonnay, Saint Pépin and Muscaté Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Noir and Marquette grapes. The lower soil is composed mainly of blue clay, which is highly sought-after for Merlot and modern North American grape varieties such as Petite Perle. This diversity allows us to produce 14 different and varied wines, each with its own character, which are well appreciated.

    1540

Les Lestonnac et la naissance de La Mission Haut–Brion

Historically speaking, the two properties have been connected since 1540, when the Bordeaux merchant Arnaud de Lestonnac purchased a plot known as Arregedhuys, the starting point for La Mission Haut-Brion. That same year, he married Marie, the only sister of Jean de Pontac, the true father of Château Haut-Brion. Aware of the tremendous potential of Graves de Haut-Brion thanks to his relationship with the Pontacs, Arnaud de Lestonnac worked hard, plant by plant and plot by plot, to create an estate dedicated entirely to winegrowing.
